In Units of Study Across the Year, bestselling author Lucy Calkins will help participants plan and teach a year-long curriculum for upper elementary writers. She will show that such a curriculum involves ongoing structures such as minilessons, conferences, small-group strategy sessions, and changing units of study—and she'll convey her newest thinking on each of these structures. For example, she will show that we can rely on four teaching methods—guided practice, demonstration, inquiry, explaining and sharing an example—to make our teaching points within both minilessons and conferences. She'll help you use small group work with efficiency. She'll show you ways to be sure your teaching cumulates. Lucy will share new rubrics and assessment structures and suggest that these can give new direction to writing conferences, small-group work, and minilessons.
Above all, Lucy will share her newest thinking about a sequence of month-long units of study that support year-long curriculum. She'll help you teach personal narrative and fiction writing. Lucy will assume that many of you have access to her series (Units of Study for Teaching Writing, Grades 3–5) and will help you make more powerful use of it.
