Workshop Description

We know that independent reading and writing, as well as small group discussion and inquiry, are crucial elements in any balanced literacy program. For twenty years, Literature Circles have been a powerful, lively way of engaging kids in these experiences. But now, after further research and nationwide classroom implementation, we know far better how to structure book clubs to improve comprehension and achievement.

In this practical, hands-on workshop, Harvey Daniels will review and demonstrate the attributes of "second generation" literature circles. The whole cycle of Literature Circles will be covered, including:

  • finding great fiction and nonfiction texts and matching them to students
  • teaching the social skills kids need to operate successfully in groups
  • forming and training groups with short text
  • scheduling and managing activities
  • solving classic problems
  • documenting and assessing learning along the way, without intruding on the trustful and spontaneous nature of authentic book discussions.

    Program Highlights

    • Why peer-led reading discussion groups enhance learning and how they fit into a balanced literacy program
    • Using short fiction and nonfiction text to train students for thinking and discussion
    • Six ways to help kids capture their reading responses—without role sheets
    • Broadening students' reading diets by genre, topic, challenge, and more
    • The use of annotation, writing, and drawing in book clubs
    • Modeling and coaching the social skills of smallgroup discussion
    • Mini-lessons that solve classic management problems: students who don't do the reading, shy and dominant members, off-task groups, and more
    • The teacher's roles as coach, mentor, observer, and documenter
    • Why and how struggling readers should shine in book clubs
    • How book clubs help students prepare for high stakes tests
    • Assessing book clubs without disrupting discussions or requiring projects
    • How Lit Circles enact current research on both comprehension strategies and discussion skills.
